Most of the time, my experience with each varies considerably, depending upon the time of day, how fast I smoke and even down to the size of the pipe I'm using. Captain Black original never disappoints me, There is good reason that it's been a stable for pipe smokers for 60 years. Mellow, a bit sweet and with little bite , it is a great go-to tobacco when I just want to sit and relax. Nothing overpowering, just a wonderful taste of natural tobacco processed just right for an experienced smoker. Tasting casing and does not taste very natural. I noticed a huge difference when smoked in a meerschaum. Like so many others Captain Black was my first endeavor in pipe smoking. All I can say is I'm still smoking pipes and loving them. Captain Black is what you buy at your local drugstore, not the premium stuff you get online/tobacconist. Do not go into it with high expectations. Most will hate to admit it but the one blend most of us started out with is still a good hearty rich enjoyable Smoke. For many years I didn't want to give in and buy it. Sweet, with a nice backing of vanilla flavor, this aromatic smoke is about as velvety as they come. I mean, pipe smoking, actually... And all advisers, I asked about a blend to begin, told me "try this!" in one accord. New smokers, for the love of God, try an aromatic from Boswell, C&D, McClelland, Lane. See my other reviews for some aromatics that even a non- aro guy can appreciate. I question as to whether it contains any actual tobacco, or is the pipe version of sheet tobacco. When I started with the pipe I bought a pouch, and having few landmarks to compare did not have many complaints at first. There is a CVS nearby and iv'e tried the three brands they have. 1) Admiral's choice __this stuff is cheap, aromatic, and generally good but very goopy unless you dry it out for a few days . 2) Borkum Rift __although the reviews on this site for this stuff is good, my first experience with it has ruined it for me. After two days of opening the pouch it had dried into a paper like chunk, which my friend commented it saying it looked like paper confetti. 3) Captain Black __this stuff is basically my all around tobacco. My wife felt it was more acceptable than my prior favourite, Balkan Sobranie. It is an easy smoke, and mild enough to puff as hard as you want. The White pouch was the nicest to me, with a vanilla/coconut scent that was so more-ish. The others, gold and blue, didn't do much for me at all. I bought this product for my husband. I was pleased how quickly the product arrived. My husband smoked the Captain Black and he said he was happy with the taste and quality of the tobacco it was smooth and he enjoyed it. I quit smoking almost twenty years ago when I gave up cigarettes and retired my pipe.
